Making the call

Is The GS-50 Right For You?

The honest version. We would rather talk you out of the wrong piano than deliver it and hear about it later.

Choose the GS-50 if

  • You are fitting out a studio, a school room or a hall
  • You teach, accompany or record and need an instrument that holds up
  • The room is large enough that a smaller grand would sound thin in it

Look at something else if

  • This is a family living room rather than a studio
  • You cannot give it clearance on all sides with the lid open
Sound and size

What The GS-50 Sounds Like

In a hall this is a serious instrument. In a lounge it mostly tells you how reflective your walls are.

Middling for weight in a range that spans 272 kg to 510 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Neither is better. Play both, which you can do on one floor at the shop.

What You Are Actually Buying

What you are buying is the rebuild, not the badge. Two GS-50s can be thousands of ringgit apart depending on what was replaced and how the last owner kept it.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Questions

Kawai GS-50: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai GS-50?

206 cm long, 155 cm wide, 102 cm tall, and about 360 kg. On a grand the length is the number that matters, because it sets the bass string length and the floor space you need.

Will a GS-50 fit my place?

You need about 2.1 m across and roughly 4.6 m² with room to sit and pass. 360 kg. Door widths and lift depth get checked in advance, not on the day. Send the room size, the floor and whether there is a service lift, and we will tell you before you travel.

Is a used GS-50 a safe buy?

What you are buying is the rebuild, not the badge. Two GS-50s can be thousands of ringgit apart depending on what was replaced and how the last owner kept it. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a GS-50 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a GS-50 specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a GS-50 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a GS-50 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.

Sunwave Piano, since 1979
