Making the call

Is The NX-40 Right For You?

The honest version. We would rather talk you out of the wrong piano than deliver it and hear about it later.

Choose the NX-40 if

  • The room is large enough that a smaller grand would sound thin in it
  • You teach, accompany or record and need an instrument that holds up
  • You are fitting out a studio, a school room or a hall

Look at something else if

  • This is a family living room rather than a studio
  • You cannot give it clearance on all sides with the lid open
Sound and size

What The NX-40 Sounds Like

Built for projection. That is wonderful on a stage and difficult at home.

Middling for weight in a range that spans 272 kg to 510 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 2.1 m across
  • Floor: roughly 4.2 m² with room to sit and pass
  • Case width 152 cm, height 102 cm
  • Access: Lift, planned move

326 kg, moved in parts and reassembled in the room, then levelled and tuned once it is standing.

Buying it used

What You Are Actually Buying

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Questions

Kawai NX-40: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai NX-40?

186 cm long, 152 cm wide, 102 cm tall, and about 326 kg. On a grand the length is the number that matters, because it sets the bass string length and the floor space you need.

Will a NX-40 fit my place?

You need about 2.1 m across and roughly 4.2 m² with room to sit and pass. 326 kg, moved in parts and reassembled in the room, then levelled and tuned once it is standing. Message us the room and the floor. It takes a minute and saves a wasted trip.

Is a used NX-40 a safe buy?

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a NX-40 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a NX-40 specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a NX-40 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If nothing suits, we will tell you that too.

How often does a NX-40 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.

Sunwave Piano, since 1979
