Making the call

Is The G2 Right For You?

The honest version. We would rather talk you out of the wrong piano than deliver it and hear about it later.

Choose the G2 if

  • You have a dedicated music room or a generous living area
  • The player is advanced enough that the instrument is now the limit
  • You want a piano that will not need replacing as the player improves

Look at something else if

  • The room is under about 20 square metres, where it will overwhelm the space
  • Access involves a staircase with tight turns
Sound and size

What The G2 Sounds Like

The middle and bottom open up at this length. It is the point where most players stop wishing for something longer. Against the Yamaha G2A it is 4 cm taller and 0 kg lighter.

Middling for weight in a range that spans 255 kg to 480 kg.

Two pedals, which is normal for its generation and market. We will say if the one on the floor has had a third added.

Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. Neither is better. Play both, which you can do on one floor at the shop.

What You Are Actually Buying

A used piano is only as good as the work done to it. Strings and dampers replaced where needed, hammers reshaped or renewed, the action regulated until repetition is even, pedal linkages set, case refinished. Then it is tuned and left to settle.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Questions

Yamaha G2: What People Ask

How big is the Yamaha G2?

173 cm long, 149 cm wide, 101 cm tall, and about 300 kg. On a grand the length is the number that matters, because it sets the bass string length and the floor space you need.

Will a G2 fit my place?

You need about 2.1 m across and roughly 4.0 m² with room to sit and pass. 300 kg. We walk the route before the day rather than discovering it on the morning. Give us the measurements and the access and we will be straight about whether it works.

Is a used G2 a safe buy?

A used piano is only as good as the work done to it. Strings and dampers replaced where needed, hammers reshaped or renewed, the action regulated until repetition is even, pedal linkages set, case refinished. Then it is tuned and left to settle. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a G2 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a G2 specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a G2 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a G2 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.
