Making the call

Is The G3 Right For You?

Worth reading the right-hand column properly. Most of the pianos that come back are access problems, not taste problems.

Choose the G3 if

  • You want a piano that will not need replacing as the player improves
  • The player is advanced enough that the instrument is now the limit
  • You have a dedicated music room or a generous living area

Look at something else if

  • The room is under about 20 square metres, where it will overwhelm the space
  • Access involves a staircase with tight turns
Sound and size

What The G3 Sounds Like

The middle and bottom open up at this length. It is the point where most players stop wishing for something longer. Against the Yamaha G2 it is 10 cm taller and 15 kg heavier.

Middling for weight in a range that spans 255 kg to 480 kg.

Two pedals, which is normal for its generation and market. We will say if the one on the floor has had a third added.

Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. It is a preference, not a ranking. Come and sit at both.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 2.1 m across
  • Floor: roughly 4.1 m² with room to sit and pass
  • Case width 149 cm, height 101 cm
  • Access: Lift, planned move

At 315 kg the route matters: door widths, lift depth, and how the landing turns.

Closest Alternatives To The G3

Yamaha built several at 183 cm long: the No. 25, No. 30. They differ in weight and case rather than in size. If the G3 is not on the floor when you ask, the table below is where we would send you next.

What You Are Actually Buying

We do not guess about individual instruments. Ask what was replaced on the G3 you are looking at and we will tell you, serial number included.

Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.

Rent First. The Rent Becomes Credit.

For families not yet sure the lessons will stick. Rent a restored piano monthly, and if you keep it, everything paid comes off the price.

Questions

Yamaha G3: What People Ask

How big is the Yamaha G3?

183 cm long, 149 cm wide, 101 cm tall, and about 315 kg. On a grand the length is the number that matters, because it sets the bass string length and the floor space you need.

Will a G3 fit my place?

You need about 2.1 m across and roughly 4.1 m² with room to sit and pass. At 315 kg the route matters: door widths, lift depth, and how the landing turns. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used G3 a safe buy?

We do not guess about individual instruments. Ask what was replaced on the G3 you are looking at and we will tell you, serial number included. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.

Can I rent a G3 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a G3 specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.

Do you have a G3 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. No stock today does not mean no stock next month. We watch for specific models.

How often does a G3 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
