Making the call

Is The RX-5 Right For You?

Worth reading the right-hand column properly. Most of the pianos that come back are access problems, not taste problems.

Choose the RX-5 if

  • You teach, accompany or record and need an instrument that holds up
  • The room is large enough that a smaller grand would sound thin in it
  • You are fitting out a studio, a school room or a hall

Look at something else if

  • This is a family living room rather than a studio
  • You cannot give it clearance on all sides with the lid open
Sound and size

What The RX-5 Sounds Like

Bass that carries without effort, and a treble that keeps singing when pushed. It needs a big room to make sense. Against the Kawai RX-3 it is 11 cm taller and 9 kg heavier.

Middling for weight in a range that spans 272 kg to 510 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Neither is better. Play both, which you can do on one floor at the shop.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 2.1 m across
  • Floor: roughly 4.4 m² with room to sit and pass
  • Case width 153 cm, height 102 cm
  • Access: Lift, planned move

335 kg, moved in parts and reassembled in the room, then levelled and tuned once it is standing.

What You Are Actually Buying

A used piano is only as good as the work done to it. Strings and dampers replaced where needed, hammers reshaped or renewed, the action regulated until repetition is even, pedal linkages set, case refinished. Then it is tuned and left to settle.

Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.

Questions

Kawai RX-5: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai RX-5?

197 cm long, 153 cm wide, 102 cm tall, and about 335 kg. On a grand the length is the number that matters, because it sets the bass string length and the floor space you need.

Will a RX-5 fit my place?

You need about 2.1 m across and roughly 4.4 m² with room to sit and pass. 335 kg, moved in parts and reassembled in the room, then levelled and tuned once it is standing. Give us the measurements and the access and we will be straight about whether it works.

Is a used RX-5 a safe buy?

A used piano is only as good as the work done to it. Strings and dampers replaced where needed, hammers reshaped or renewed, the action regulated until repetition is even, pedal linkages set, case refinished. Then it is tuned and left to settle. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.

Can I rent a RX-5 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a RX-5 specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.

Do you have a RX-5 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If nothing suits, we will tell you that too.

How often does a RX-5 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
