Making the call

Is The RX-1 Right For You?

Worth reading the right-hand column properly. Most of the pianos that come back are access problems, not taste problems.

Choose the RX-1 if

  • You want a piano that will not need replacing as the player improves
  • The player is advanced enough that the instrument is now the limit
  • You have a dedicated music room or a generous living area

Look at something else if

  • The room is under about 20 square metres, where it will overwhelm the space
  • Access involves a staircase with tight turns
Sound and size

What The RX-1 Sounds Like

Balanced rather than spectacular. For a room in a house that is exactly right. Against the Kawai RX-2 it is 14 cm shorter and 15 kg lighter.

Among the lightest we list, in a range that runs from 272 kg to 510 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 2.1 m across
  • Floor: roughly 3.9 m² with room to sit and pass
  • Case width 150 cm, height 102 cm
  • Access: Lift, moved in parts

285 kg. Short for a grand, still a planned move rather than a delivery.

What You Are Actually Buying

A used piano is only as good as the work done to it. Strings and dampers replaced where needed, hammers reshaped or renewed, the action regulated until repetition is even, pedal linkages set, case refinished. Then it is tuned and left to settle.

Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.

Questions

Kawai RX-1: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai RX-1?

164 cm long, 150 cm wide, 102 cm tall, and about 285 kg. On a grand the length is the number that matters, because it sets the bass string length and the floor space you need.

Will a RX-1 fit my place?

You need about 2.1 m across and roughly 3.9 m² with room to sit and pass. 285 kg. Short for a grand, still a planned move rather than a delivery. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used RX-1 a safe buy?

A used piano is only as good as the work done to it. Strings and dampers replaced where needed, hammers reshaped or renewed, the action regulated until repetition is even, pedal linkages set, case refinished. Then it is tuned and left to settle. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.

Can I rent a RX-1 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a RX-1 specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.

Do you have a RX-1 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. When we are out, we say so rather than steer you into whatever is on the floor.

How often does a RX-1 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
