Making the call

Is The CL-3 Right For You?

Worth reading the right-hand column properly. Most of the pianos that come back are access problems, not taste problems.

Choose the CL-3 if

  • You want something that resells easily if plans change
  • You want a piano that sounds properly like one without taking over the room
  • The room is normal rather than generous

Look at something else if

  • A teacher has specifically asked for a full-height instrument
  • The room is large and hard-surfaced, where a taller piano would carry better
Sound and size

What The CL-3 Sounds Like

There is enough string length for the middle of the keyboard to sing properly. The bass is honest rather than huge, which is the trade at this size.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 10 cm shorter and 10 kg lighter. Middling for weight in a range that spans 160 kg to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.5 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.0 m²
  • Case width 152 cm, depth 56 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

210 kg is normal for this size. Access matters more than the number does. At 56 cm front to back it is one of the shallower cases in the range, which is worth knowing if the hallway it has to pass through is narrow.

Kawai built several at 122 cm tall: the No. K8, CL-2, AT-22. They differ in weight and case rather than in size. If the CL-3 is not on the floor when you ask, the table below is where we would send you next.

What You Are Actually Buying

Every Kawai we sell has been through a full restoration in Japan and a second rebuild in Selangor. The second one matters most, because by then the piano has been through a humidity change we can actually see the effects of.

Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.

Questions

Kawai CL-3: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai CL-3?

122 cm tall, 152 cm wide, 56 cm deep, and about 210 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a CL-3 fit my place?

You need about 1.5 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². 210 kg is normal for this size. Access matters more than the number does. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used CL-3 a safe buy?

Every Kawai we sell has been through a full restoration in Japan and a second rebuild in Selangor. The second one matters most, because by then the piano has been through a humidity change we can actually see the effects of. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.

Can I rent a CL-3 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a CL-3 specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.

Do you have a CL-3 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a CL-3 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
