Making the call

Is The AT-22 Right For You?

Both sides of it. If the right-hand column sounds like your situation, say so and we will point you elsewhere.

Choose the AT-22 if

  • You want something that resells easily if plans change
  • A child is starting lessons and will be at it for years
  • You want a piano that sounds properly like one without taking over the room

Look at something else if

  • A teacher has specifically asked for a full-height instrument
  • The room is large and hard-surfaced, where a taller piano would carry better
Sound and size

What The AT-22 Sounds Like

There is enough string length for the middle of the keyboard to sing properly. The bass is honest rather than huge, which is the trade at this size. Against the Kawai HAT-7 it is 9 cm taller and 62 kg heavier.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 10 cm shorter and 2 kg heavier. Middling for weight in a range that spans 160 kg to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.5 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.0 m²
  • Case width 150 cm, depth 59 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

At 222 kg it is an ordinary move. Lift, fine. Stairs, tell us how many and which way they turn. At 59 cm front to back it is one of the shallower cases in the range, which is worth knowing if the hallway it has to pass through is narrow.

What You Are Actually Buying

We do not guess about individual instruments. Ask what was replaced on the AT-22 you are looking at and we will tell you, serial number included.

Humidity decides how a piano ages here. These were built for a climate with a winter, and in Malaysia the soundboard takes up moisture and gives it back, week after week. That movement pulls a piano out of tune, not playing it.

Silent system

You Can Practise This One At Midnight

The AT-22 is an acoustic piano with Kawai's silent system fitted. A lever stops the hammers before they reach the strings, sensors read the keys, and it comes out through headphones. The action underneath is unchanged, so practice still transfers to a normal piano.

Buying one used, the thing to check is the electronics rather than the piano. We test the system before anything goes on the floor. If it has died, we say so and price it as the acoustic piano it still is.

Questions

Kawai AT-22: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai AT-22?

122 cm tall, 150 cm wide, 59 cm deep, and about 222 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a AT-22 fit my place?

You need about 1.5 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². At 222 kg it is an ordinary move. Lift, fine. Stairs, tell us how many and which way they turn. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used AT-22 a safe buy?

We do not guess about individual instruments. Ask what was replaced on the AT-22 you are looking at and we will tell you, serial number included. Five years of parts and labour cover comes with it, from the same people who rebuilt it.

Can I rent a AT-22 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a AT-22 specifically. Ask what is free now. The rent turns into credit the moment you decide to buy it.

Do you have a AT-22 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a AT-22 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Humidity decides how a piano ages here. These were built for a climate with a winter, and in Malaysia the soundboard takes up moisture and gives it back, week after week. That movement pulls a piano out of tune, not playing it. Two tunings after delivery are included when you buy from us.
