You do not need to diagnose it. Describe what you can hear or feel and we will tell you which of these it is. This table is what we run through ourselves when somebody messages us.

Piano repair sounds like an instrument leaving the house for a month. Most of the time it is a technician with a bench roll working at your piano for an afternoon.

In the workshop: restringing, a full action rebuild, a new set of hammers or anything that needs the instrument apart. That starts with a move, which is our own crew.

Our piano shop is at Tropicana City Mall in Petaling Jaya, so most of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor is inside an hour of a van. We do travel further for the right job, and delivery on a piano bought from us is free anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia. Staircase carries are quoted separately, because the cost comes from the steps and the turns rather than the distance.

A few keys stick. Is that a repair or a rebuild?

Almost always a repair, and usually a short one. Sticking keys in Malaysia are normally swollen centre pins or a key bushing that has taken up moisture, and both are bench work on the affected notes rather than anything structural.

One note makes no sound at all. What has happened?

Usually a broken hammer shank, a jack that has come out of position or a hammer that is no longer being caught. A dead note sounds alarming and is one of the cheaper things on the list to put right.

Can you fix a pedal that has stopped working?

Yes. Pedal problems are almost always in the linkage, the dowel or the trapwork under the keybed rather than in the pedal you can see. It is worth saying which pedal and what it does now, because a soft pedal that has gone slack and a sustain that will not release are different jobs.

Do you carry parts for older Japanese pianos?

Yes, and that is the practical reason we recommend Yamaha and Kawai. Forty years of rebuilding the same instruments means the workshop has the parts and knows which generation took which part.

Is it worth repairing an old piano at all?

It depends on what is wrong. Action work, pedals, keys and hammers on a sound instrument are almost always worth doing. A cracked soundboard, a split bridge or tuning pins that no longer hold are a different conversation, and we will tell you plainly when the money is better spent elsewhere.
