Making the call

Is The AT-32 Right For You?

Worth reading the right-hand column properly. Most of the pianos that come back are access problems, not taste problems.

Choose the AT-32 if

  • The player is preparing for practical exams or teaches at home
  • You have the floor space and the access to take a large upright
  • There is a service lift, so the weight is not the problem

Look at something else if

  • There is no service lift and the piano has to go upstairs
  • The room is small, where a big instrument mostly produces reverberation
  • Nobody in the house plays beyond early grades yet
Sound and size

What The AT-32 Sounds Like

Full-length bass strings and the biggest soundboard in the range. It fills a room without being forced, which is what teachers listen for. Against the Kawai AT-22 it is 10 cm taller and 30 kg heavier.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 32 kg heavier. Near the top of the weight range, which runs from 160 kg up to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.1 m²
  • Case width 156 cm, depth 65 cm
  • Access: Service lift

At 252 kg we want to see the route before quoting a staircase carry.

Closest Alternatives To The AT-32

Kawai built several at 132 cm tall: the No. K35, No. K48, No. K50, BL-61 and 19 others. They differ in weight and case rather than in size. If the AT-32 is not on the floor when you ask, the table below is where we would send you next.

Buying it used

What You Are Actually Buying

Every Kawai we sell has been through a full restoration in Japan and a second rebuild in Selangor. The second one matters most, because by then the piano has been through a humidity change we can actually see the effects of.

Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.

Our rent-to-own programme

Silent system

You Can Practise This One At Midnight

The AT-32 is an acoustic piano with Kawai's silent system fitted. A lever stops the hammers before they reach the strings, sensors read the keys, and it comes out through headphones. The action underneath is unchanged, so practice still transfers to a normal piano.

Buying one used, the thing to check is the electronics rather than the piano. We test the system before anything goes on the floor. If it has died, we say so and price it as the acoustic piano it still is.

Where The AT-32 Sits In The Range

Acoustic pianos fitted with Kawai's silent system, so the action can be muted and played through headphones.

Questions

Kawai AT-32: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai AT-32?

132 cm tall, 156 cm wide, 65 cm deep, and about 252 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a AT-32 fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². At 252 kg we want to see the route before quoting a staircase carry. Send the room size, the floor and whether there is a service lift, and we will tell you before you travel.

Is a used AT-32 a safe buy?

Every Kawai we sell has been through a full restoration in Japan and a second rebuild in Selangor. The second one matters most, because by then the piano has been through a humidity change we can actually see the effects of. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.

Can I rent a AT-32 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a AT-32 specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.

Do you have a AT-32 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a AT-32 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
