Making the call

Is The BL-12 Right For You?

Read both. The second list is the one that saves people money.

Choose the BL-12 if

  • A child is starting lessons and will be at it for years
  • You want a piano that sounds properly like one without taking over the room
  • You may move house again and would rather not own the heaviest option

Look at something else if

  • A teacher has specifically asked for a full-height instrument
  • The room is large and hard-surfaced, where a taller piano would carry better
Sound and size

What The BL-12 Sounds Like

Middle register is where these live, and it is good. The lowest octave is adequate rather than a selling point.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 8 cm shorter and 20 kg lighter. Middling for weight in a range that spans 160 kg to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Neither is better. Play both, which you can do on one floor at the shop.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.5 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.0 m²
  • Case width 152 cm, depth 61 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

200 kg is normal for this size. Access matters more than the number does.

Buying it used

What You Are Actually Buying

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate.

The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do.

Our rent-to-own programme

Rent First. The Rent Becomes Credit.

Renting first is the low-risk way in. Nothing you pay is wasted, because it counts toward buying the piano later.

Questions

Kawai BL-12: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai BL-12?

124 cm tall, 152 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 200 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a BL-12 fit my place?

You need about 1.5 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². 200 kg is normal for this size. Access matters more than the number does. Send the room size, the floor and whether there is a service lift, and we will tell you before you travel.

Is a used BL-12 a safe buy?

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate. There is a five-year warranty behind it, and we are the ones who service it.

Can I rent a BL-12 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a BL-12 specifically. Ask what is free now. Nothing paid in rent is wasted if you decide to keep the piano.

Do you have a BL-12 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. When we are out, we say so rather than steer you into whatever is on the floor.

How often does a BL-12 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do. We include the two tunings it needs after moving.
