Making the call

Is The BL-82 Right For You?

The honest version. We would rather talk you out of the wrong piano than deliver it and hear about it later.

Choose the BL-82 if

  • You want the closest thing to a grand that still stands against a wall
  • The bass on a smaller piano has started to sound thin to you
  • You are setting up a studio or a teaching room

Look at something else if

  • There is no service lift and the piano has to go upstairs
  • The room is small, where a big instrument mostly produces reverberation
  • Nobody in the house plays beyond early grades yet
Sound and size

What The BL-82 Sounds Like

The low register has real weight to it. Played hard it stays musical instead of turning percussive.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 40 kg heavier. Near the top of the weight range, which runs from 160 kg up to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.1 m²
  • Case width 154 cm, depth 66 cm
  • Access: Lift needed

260 kg is near the top of what an upright weighs. Staircases get quoted only after we see the access. The case is 66 cm deep, which is more than most. Measure the doorway rather than assuming it will turn.

What You Are Actually Buying

What you are buying is the rebuild, not the badge. Two BL-82s can be thousands of ringgit apart depending on what was replaced and how the last owner kept it.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Questions

Kawai BL-82: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai BL-82?

132 cm tall, 154 cm wide, 66 cm deep, and about 260 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a BL-82 fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². 260 kg is near the top of what an upright weighs. Staircases get quoted only after we see the access. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used BL-82 a safe buy?

What you are buying is the rebuild, not the badge. Two BL-82s can be thousands of ringgit apart depending on what was replaced and how the last owner kept it. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a BL-82 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a BL-82 specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a BL-82 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a BL-82 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.
