Making the call

Is The CX-5 Right For You?

The honest version. We would rather talk you out of the wrong piano than deliver it and hear about it later.

Choose the CX-5 if

  • You would rather have a small acoustic than a large digital
  • You want the lowest-profile acoustic piano that is still a real piano
  • Your room is small, or the piano shares a wall with a neighbour

Look at something else if

  • You are working towards higher grades and need more bass
  • You want an instrument that will still satisfy an advanced player in five years
Sound and size

What The CX-5 Sounds Like

The bottom octave is honest rather than impressive. Everything from the middle upward does what it should.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 20 cm shorter and 20 kg lighter. Middling for weight in a range that spans 160 kg to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.5 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.0 m²
  • Case width 150 cm, depth 61 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

200 kg goes into a service lift without drama. A short flight of stairs is workable if we walk it first.

Buying it used

What You Are Actually Buying

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Questions

Kawai CX-5: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai CX-5?

112 cm tall, 150 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 200 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a CX-5 fit my place?

You need about 1.5 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². 200 kg goes into a service lift without drama. A short flight of stairs is workable if we walk it first. Message us the room and the floor. It takes a minute and saves a wasted trip.

Is a used CX-5 a safe buy?

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a CX-5 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a CX-5 specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a CX-5 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a CX-5 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.

Sunwave Piano, since 1979
