Making the call

Is The KU-5D Right For You?

Read both. The second list is the one that saves people money.

Choose the KU-5D if

  • You want the closest thing to a grand that still stands against a wall
  • You are setting up a studio or a teaching room
  • The bass on a smaller piano has started to sound thin to you

Look at something else if

  • There is no service lift and the piano has to go upstairs
  • The room is small, where a big instrument mostly produces reverberation
  • Nobody in the house plays beyond early grades yet
Sound and size

What The KU-5D Sounds Like

The low register has real weight to it. Played hard it stays musical instead of turning percussive.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 40 kg heavier. Near the top of the weight range, which runs from 160 kg up to 270 kg.

The B and D suffixes across the KU line mark revisions rather than sizes. Judge a KU-5D on how it was kept, not on the letter.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.1 m²
  • Case width 154 cm, depth 66 cm
  • Access: Lift needed

At 260 kg this needs a lift. We will look at the route before agreeing to anything else. The case is 66 cm deep, which is more than most. Measure the doorway rather than assuming it will turn.

What You Are Actually Buying

A used piano is only as good as the work done to it. Strings and dampers replaced where needed, hammers reshaped or renewed, the action regulated until repetition is even, pedal linkages set, case refinished. Then it is tuned and left to settle.

The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do.

Where The KU-5D Sits In The Range

Kawai's long-running domestic line for the Japanese market, which is why so many reach Malaysia. B and D suffixes mark later revisions, not different sizes.

Questions

Kawai KU-5D: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai KU-5D?

132 cm tall, 154 cm wide, 66 cm deep, and about 260 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a KU-5D fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². At 260 kg this needs a lift. We will look at the route before agreeing to anything else. Send the room size, the floor and whether there is a service lift, and we will tell you before you travel.

Is a used KU-5D a safe buy?

A used piano is only as good as the work done to it. Strings and dampers replaced where needed, hammers reshaped or renewed, the action regulated until repetition is even, pedal linkages set, case refinished. Then it is tuned and left to settle. There is a five-year warranty behind it, and we are the ones who service it.

Can I rent a KU-5D instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a KU-5D specifically. Ask what is free now. Nothing paid in rent is wasted if you decide to keep the piano.

Do you have a KU-5D in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. No stock today does not mean no stock next month. We watch for specific models.

How often does a KU-5D need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do. We include the two tunings it needs after moving.
