Sound and size

What The P1 Sounds Like

Short strings, so the tone is direct rather than deep. In a small tiled room that is usually an advantage, because a big piano in a hard little room mostly gives you echo. Against the Yamaha M1A it is 5 cm taller and 0 kg lighter.

Set against the Yamaha U1H, the most commonly sold used Yamaha here, it is 8 cm shorter and 37 kg lighter. Among the lightest we list, in a range that runs from 180 kg to 254 kg.

Pianos of this generation often left the factory with two pedals. A third gets fitted during the rebuild.

Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.
