127 cm and 228 kg. The U2 is the piano people buy when they have played a U1 for a year and started to notice what it cannot do underneath. Six centimetres does not sound like much until you play a left hand chord on both.
Tell us the room, the floor and whether there is a lift. We will say whether this one works before you make the trip.
Yamaha
In the price, not added at the end.
The middle size that most people never consider, and often should.
The extra string length shows up below middle C, where a U1 starts to thin out and this does not. The treble keeps the Yamaha clarity, so you gain weight without losing the definition that makes these good practice instruments.
The U2 is the least talked about of the three Yamaha sizes, which is exactly why it is often the best value. Buyers jump from the U1 to the U3 and skip the size in between.
Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.
228 kg. Eleven kilos over a U1H, which changes nothing in a lift and matters on stairs. At 61 cm front to back it is one of the shallower cases in the range, which is worth knowing if the hallway it has to pass through is narrow.
Yamaha built several at 127 cm tall: the U2D, U2E, U2F, U2G and 2 others. They differ in weight and case rather than in size. If the U2H is not on the floor when you ask, the table below is where we would send you next.
| Model | Height | Weight | Width |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamaha U2H This model | 127 cm | 228 kg | 150 cm |
| Yamaha U2D | 127 cm | 228 kg | 150 cm |
| Yamaha U2E | 127 cm | 228 kg | 150 cm |
| Yamaha U2F | 127 cm | 228 kg | 150 cm |
U2s often come out of homes rather than schools, so the wear pattern tends to be lighter. That is a generalisation, not a guarantee. Look at the hammers.
Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.
If you are not ready to commit, rent one by the month. Decide to keep it and the rent you have paid comes off the purchase price.
127 cm, six centimetres taller than a U1, and the difference lands in the bass rather than the touch.
127 cm tall, 150 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 228 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.
You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². 228 kg. Eleven kilos over a U1H, which changes nothing in a lift and matters on stairs. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.
U2s often come out of homes rather than schools, so the wear pattern tends to be lighter. That is a generalisation, not a guarantee. Look at the hammers. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.
Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a U2H specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.
Ask, because it changes week to week. If nothing suits, we will tell you that too.
Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
Ask what is actually in the shop today. We will send photos of the specific piano, tell you what was replaced in the rebuild, and be honest if another model fits you better.
