Making the call

Is The W105 Right For You?

Read both. The second list is the one that saves people money.

Choose the W105 if

  • The player is preparing for practical exams or teaches at home
  • There is a service lift, so the weight is not the problem
  • You have the floor space and the access to take a large upright

Look at something else if

  • There is no service lift and the piano has to go upstairs
  • The room is small, where a big instrument mostly produces reverberation
  • Nobody in the house plays beyond early grades yet
Sound and size

What The W105 Sounds Like

This is as close as an upright gets to a grand in the bass. It also needs a room that can take that much sound. Same case as the Yamaha W102, 2 kg lighter.

Set against the Yamaha U1H, the most commonly sold used Yamaha here, it is 10 cm taller and 31 kg heavier. Near the top of the weight range, which runs from 180 kg up to 254 kg.

Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. It is a preference, not a ranking. Come and sit at both.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.1 m²
  • Case width 154 cm, depth 66 cm
  • Access: Service lift

248 kg. Fine with a service lift, a real piece of work without one. The case is 66 cm deep, which is more than most. Measure the doorway rather than assuming it will turn.

Buying it used

What You Are Actually Buying

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate.

The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do.

Our rent-to-own programme

Rent First. The Rent Becomes Credit.

Renting first is the low-risk way in. Nothing you pay is wasted, because it counts toward buying the piano later.

Questions

Yamaha W105: What People Ask

How big is the Yamaha W105?

131 cm tall, 154 cm wide, 66 cm deep, and about 248 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a W105 fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². 248 kg. Fine with a service lift, a real piece of work without one. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used W105 a safe buy?

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate. There is a five-year warranty behind it, and we are the ones who service it.

Can I rent a W105 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a W105 specifically. Ask what is free now. Nothing paid in rent is wasted if you decide to keep the piano.

Do you have a W105 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. When we are out, we say so rather than steer you into whatever is on the floor.

How often does a W105 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do. We include the two tunings it needs after moving.
