What The U3A Sounds Like

Where the work has been done well, these have a rounder top than the later U3s while keeping the bass weight. Where it has not, the treble goes hard and no amount of tuning fixes it.

Sits at the start of the U3 alphabet. Fewer arrive here in good order, so the ones that do have generally been through a proper workshop.

Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.
