Making the call

Is The KG-8 Right For You?

The honest version. We would rather talk you out of the wrong piano than deliver it and hear about it later.

Choose the KG-8 if

  • You need an instrument that carries over an orchestra
  • You are equipping a stage, a hall or a recording room
  • The space and the budget are both institutional rather than domestic

Look at something else if

  • It is going into a house, in which case almost anything else is a better buy
  • You do not have the ceiling height and floor area a hall provides
Sound and size

What The KG-8 Sounds Like

Designed to be heard over an orchestra at the back of a hall. In a domestic room it produces more sound than the space can absorb. Against the Kawai KG-7D it is 52 cm taller and 90 kg heavier.

Near the top of the weight range, which runs from 272 kg up to 510 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 2.2 m across
  • Floor: roughly 5.8 m² with room to sit and pass
  • Case width 158 cm, height 102 cm
  • Access: Institutional access

510 kg. This needs loading access and a crew booked for it specifically.

What You Are Actually Buying

Every Kawai we sell has been through a full restoration in Japan and a second rebuild in Selangor. The second one matters most, because by then the piano has been through a humidity change we can actually see the effects of.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Questions

Kawai KG-8: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai KG-8?

276 cm long, 158 cm wide, 102 cm tall, and about 510 kg. On a grand the length is the number that matters, because it sets the bass string length and the floor space you need.

Will a KG-8 fit my place?

You need about 2.2 m across and roughly 5.8 m² with room to sit and pass. 510 kg. This needs loading access and a crew booked for it specifically. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used KG-8 a safe buy?

Every Kawai we sell has been through a full restoration in Japan and a second rebuild in Selangor. The second one matters most, because by then the piano has been through a humidity change we can actually see the effects of. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a KG-8 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a KG-8 specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a KG-8 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a KG-8 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.
