Making the call

Is The K20 Right For You?

Read both. The second list is the one that saves people money.

Choose the K20 if

  • Grades are coming and the player has outgrown a small instrument
  • You want this to be the last piano you buy for a while
  • More than one person in the house plays seriously

Look at something else if

  • Your ceiling or wall space is genuinely tight
  • There is no service lift and the staircase has awkward turns
Sound and size

What The K20 Sounds Like

The extra centimetres go into the bass strings, and you hear it below middle C. Chords have something underneath them.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 7 cm shorter and 20 kg lighter. Middling for weight in a range that spans 160 kg to 270 kg.

Pianos of this generation often left the factory with two pedals. A third gets fitted during the rebuild.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. It is a preference, not a ranking. Come and sit at both.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.0 m²
  • Case width 152 cm, depth 61 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

At 200 kg it is an ordinary move. Lift, fine. Stairs, tell us how many and which way they turn.

What You Are Actually Buying

What you are buying is the rebuild, not the badge. Two No. K20s can be thousands of ringgit apart depending on what was replaced and how the last owner kept it.

The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do.

Where The K20 Sits In The Range

The first generation of Kawai uprights, and the line the later series grew out of. Many left the factory with two pedals and have had a third fitted during restoration.

Questions

Kawai No. K20: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai No. K20?

125 cm tall, 152 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 200 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a K20 fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². At 200 kg it is an ordinary move. Lift, fine. Stairs, tell us how many and which way they turn. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used K20 a safe buy?

What you are buying is the rebuild, not the badge. Two No. K20s can be thousands of ringgit apart depending on what was replaced and how the last owner kept it. There is a five-year warranty behind it, and we are the ones who service it.

Can I rent a K20 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a K20 specifically. Ask what is free now. Nothing paid in rent is wasted if you decide to keep the piano.

Do you have a K20 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. When we are out, we say so rather than steer you into whatever is on the floor.

How often does a K20 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do. We include the two tunings it needs after moving.
