Making the call

Is The K35 Right For You?

Worth reading the right-hand column properly. Most of the pianos that come back are access problems, not taste problems.

Choose the K35 if

  • The player is preparing for practical exams or teaches at home
  • You have the floor space and the access to take a large upright
  • There is a service lift, so the weight is not the problem

Look at something else if

  • There is no service lift and the piano has to go upstairs
  • The room is small, where a big instrument mostly produces reverberation
  • Nobody in the house plays beyond early grades yet
Sound and size

What The K35 Sounds Like

The low register has real weight to it. Played hard it stays musical instead of turning percussive.

This is the one most people mean when they say a used Kawai. It is the yardstick the rest of the range gets measured against, here and everywhere else. Middling for weight in a range that spans 160 kg to 270 kg.

Pianos of this generation often left the factory with two pedals. A third gets fitted during the rebuild.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.1 m²
  • Case width 152 cm, depth 61 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

220 kg goes into a service lift without drama. A short flight of stairs is workable if we walk it first.

Closest Alternatives To The K35

Kawai built several at 132 cm tall: the No. K48, No. K50, BL-61, BL-71 and 19 others. They differ in weight and case rather than in size. If the K35 is not on the floor when you ask, the table below is where we would send you next.

What You Are Actually Buying

What you are buying is the rebuild, not the badge. Two No. K35s can be thousands of ringgit apart depending on what was replaced and how the last owner kept it.

Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.

Where The K35 Sits In The Range

The first generation of Kawai uprights, and the line the later series grew out of. Many left the factory with two pedals and have had a third fitted during restoration.

Questions

Kawai No. K35: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai No. K35?

132 cm tall, 152 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 220 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a K35 fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². 220 kg goes into a service lift without drama. A short flight of stairs is workable if we walk it first. Send the room size, the floor and whether there is a service lift, and we will tell you before you travel.

Is a used K35 a safe buy?

What you are buying is the rebuild, not the badge. Two No. K35s can be thousands of ringgit apart depending on what was replaced and how the last owner kept it. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.

Can I rent a K35 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a K35 specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.

Do you have a K35 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. When we are out, we say so rather than steer you into whatever is on the floor.

How often does a K35 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
