Making the call

Is The US-55 Right For You?

Read both. The second list is the one that saves people money.

Choose the US-55 if

  • The bass on a smaller piano has started to sound thin to you
  • There is a service lift, so the weight is not the problem
  • The player is preparing for practical exams or teaches at home

Look at something else if

  • There is no service lift and the piano has to go upstairs
  • The room is small, where a big instrument mostly produces reverberation
  • Nobody in the house plays beyond early grades yet
Sound and size

What The US-55 Sounds Like

Full-length bass strings and the biggest soundboard in the range. It fills a room without being forced, which is what teachers listen for.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 45 kg heavier. Near the top of the weight range, which runs from 160 kg up to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.1 m²
  • Case width 154 cm, depth 66 cm
  • Access: Lift needed

At 265 kg this needs a lift. We will look at the route before agreeing to anything else. The case is 66 cm deep, which is more than most. Measure the doorway rather than assuming it will turn.

Buying it used

What You Are Actually Buying

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate.

The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do.

Questions

Kawai US-55: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai US-55?

132 cm tall, 154 cm wide, 66 cm deep, and about 265 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a US-55 fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². At 265 kg this needs a lift. We will look at the route before agreeing to anything else. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used US-55 a safe buy?

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate. There is a five-year warranty behind it, and we are the ones who service it.

Can I rent a US-55 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a US-55 specifically. Ask what is free now. Nothing paid in rent is wasted if you decide to keep the piano.

Do you have a US-55 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. When we are out, we say so rather than steer you into whatever is on the floor.

How often does a US-55 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do. We include the two tunings it needs after moving.
