Making the call

Is The US-75 Right For You?

Worth reading the right-hand column properly. Most of the pianos that come back are access problems, not taste problems.

Choose the US-75 if

  • The player is preparing for practical exams or teaches at home
  • You are setting up a studio or a teaching room
  • You want the closest thing to a grand that still stands against a wall

Look at something else if

  • There is no service lift and the piano has to go upstairs
  • The room is small, where a big instrument mostly produces reverberation
  • Nobody in the house plays beyond early grades yet
Sound and size

What The US-75 Sounds Like

This is as close as an upright gets to a grand in the bass. It also needs a room that can take that much sound.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 50 kg heavier. Near the top of the weight range, which runs from 160 kg up to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.1 m²
  • Case width 156 cm, depth 67 cm
  • Access: Lift needed

270 kg. Heavy enough that the move needs planning rather than optimism. The case is 67 cm deep, which is more than most. Measure the doorway rather than assuming it will turn.

Buying it used

What You Are Actually Buying

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate.

Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.

Where The US-75 Sits In The Range

Kawai's professional line, and the heaviest uprights they built for homes and institutions. Long strings and weights that need planning.

Questions

Kawai US-75: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai US-75?

132 cm tall, 156 cm wide, 67 cm deep, and about 270 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a US-75 fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². 270 kg. Heavy enough that the move needs planning rather than optimism. Give us the measurements and the access and we will be straight about whether it works.

Is a used US-75 a safe buy?

The risk with any used piano is buying somebody else's problem: polished case, fine for a month, then it will not hold a tuning. Ours are rebuilt twice before you see them, once in Japan and again in our own workshop here, and the second pass happens after the instrument has crossed the equator and shown us how it reacts to this climate. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.

Can I rent a US-75 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a US-75 specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.

Do you have a US-75 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a US-75 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
