Making the call

Is The US-70 Right For You?

The honest version. We would rather talk you out of the wrong piano than deliver it and hear about it later.

Choose the US-70 if

  • The bass on a smaller piano has started to sound thin to you
  • You are setting up a studio or a teaching room
  • There is a service lift, so the weight is not the problem

Look at something else if

  • There is no service lift and the piano has to go upstairs
  • The room is small, where a big instrument mostly produces reverberation
  • Nobody in the house plays beyond early grades yet
Sound and size

What The US-70 Sounds Like

This is as close as an upright gets to a grand in the bass. It also needs a room that can take that much sound.

Set against the Kawai No. K35, the most commonly sold used Kawai here, it is 45 kg heavier. Near the top of the weight range, which runs from 160 kg up to 270 kg.

Kawai voicing runs warmer than Yamaha at the same size, particularly up top. People who practise for hours tend to prefer it. Neither is better. Play both, which you can do on one floor at the shop.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.6 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.1 m²
  • Case width 154 cm, depth 66 cm
  • Access: Lift needed

265 kg. Heavy enough that the move needs planning rather than optimism. The case is 66 cm deep, which is more than most. Measure the doorway rather than assuming it will turn.

What You Are Actually Buying

Every Kawai we sell has been through a full restoration in Japan and a second rebuild in Selangor. The second one matters most, because by then the piano has been through a humidity change we can actually see the effects of.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Questions

Kawai US-70: What People Ask

How big is the Kawai US-70?

132 cm tall, 154 cm wide, 66 cm deep, and about 265 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a US-70 fit my place?

You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². 265 kg. Heavy enough that the move needs planning rather than optimism. Give us the measurements and the access and we will be straight about whether it works.

Is a used US-70 a safe buy?

Every Kawai we sell has been through a full restoration in Japan and a second rebuild in Selangor. The second one matters most, because by then the piano has been through a humidity change we can actually see the effects of. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a US-70 instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a US-70 specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a US-70 in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a US-70 need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.

Sunwave Piano, since 1979
