131 cm and 248 kg. This is the piano teachers name when a student is heading for practical exams, and the one most people mean by a proper upright. It is also 31 kg heavier than a U1H, which is the part that catches buyers out on delivery day.
Give us the floor and the lift situation and we will be straight with you about whether this one suits.
Yamaha
In the price, not added at the end.
The most piano you can get without a grand, and the most access you will need for an upright.
Long bass strings and a big soundboard, so the low register has weight that no 121 cm piano can produce. Played hard it stays musical instead of turning percussive, which is exactly what matters when somebody is working up an exam programme.
The H is the most common U3 in restored form and the best supported by technicians here. If you are buying one Yamaha upright for the next fifteen years, this is the default answer.
Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. Which you prefer is genuinely personal, and twenty minutes at the shop settles it faster than any description.
248 kg is the number to plan around. In a service lift it is routine. Up stairs it is a real job and we will want to see the turns before quoting. The case is 65 cm deep, which is more than most. Measure the doorway rather than assuming it will turn.
Yamaha built several at 131 cm tall: the U3A, U3D, U3E, U3F and 15 others. They differ in weight and case rather than in size. If the U3H is not on the floor when you ask, the table below is where we would send you next.
| Model | Height | Weight | Width |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamaha U3H This model | 131 cm | 248 kg | 154 cm |
| Yamaha U3A | 131 cm | 248 kg | 154 cm |
| Yamaha U3D | 131 cm | 248 kg | 154 cm |
| Yamaha U3E | 131 cm | 248 kg | 154 cm |
U3s often came out of schools and studios, so some have had heavy use. That is not automatically bad if the action was rebuilt properly, but it makes asking what was replaced more important, not less.
Humidity decides how a piano ages here. These were built for a climate with a winter, and in Malaysia the soundboard takes up moisture and gives it back, week after week. That movement pulls a piano out of tune, not playing it.
For families not yet sure the lessons will stick. Rent a restored piano monthly, and if you keep it, everything paid comes off the price.
Yamaha's 131 cm upright. What teachers ask for, and what most exam candidates practise on at home.
131 cm tall, 154 cm wide, 65 cm deep, and about 248 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.
You need about 1.6 m of wall and roughly 1.1 m². 248 kg is the number to plan around. In a service lift it is routine. Up stairs it is a real job and we will want to see the turns before quoting. Send the room size, the floor and whether there is a service lift, and we will tell you before you travel.
U3s often came out of schools and studios, so some have had heavy use. That is not automatically bad if the action was rebuilt properly, but it makes asking what was replaced more important, not less. Five years of parts and labour cover comes with it, from the same people who rebuilt it.
Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a U3H specifically. Ask what is free now. The rent turns into credit the moment you decide to buy it.
Ask, because it changes week to week. If nothing suits, we will tell you that too.
Twice a year. Humidity decides how a piano ages here. These were built for a climate with a winter, and in Malaysia the soundboard takes up moisture and gives it back, week after week. That movement pulls a piano out of tune, not playing it. Two tunings after delivery are included when you buy from us.
Stock changes weekly. Message us and we will tell you whether a U3H is on the floor, send photos and the serial number, and say if something else suits you better.
