Yamaha U1D Upright Piano

An earlier U1 in the same 121 cm case as the more familiar U1H, and a kilo heavier at 218 kg. Buying one is a bet on condition rather than on the model, because the cabinet and the scale are the same.

Making the call

Is The U1D Right For You?

Worth considering if you would rather put your money into condition than into a later letter.

Choose the U1D if

  • You are comparing individual pianos rather than shopping by model name
  • A well kept earlier instrument appeals more than a tired later one
  • The room suits a 121 cm upright

Look at something else if

  • You want the model with the deepest parts and technician familiarity, which is the U1H
  • Resale matters more to you than the instrument itself
Sound and size

What The U1D Sounds Like

The same compact voice as the rest of the U1 line: quick in the middle, clear on top, honest rather than large underneath. Older examples that have been properly rebuilt often have a slightly warmer top end than the later ones.

D sits early in the U1 alphabet. In practice the letter tells you the generation, not the size, so the decision between a U1D and a U1H comes down to what each individual instrument has been through.

Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. Neither is better. Play both, which you can do on one floor at the shop.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.5 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.0 m²
  • Case width 150 cm, depth 61 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

218 kg, so the same straightforward move as any other U1. Lift is easy, stairs are a job we would want to walk first. At 61 cm front to back it is one of the shallower cases in the range, which is worth knowing if the hallway it has to pass through is narrow.

What You Are Actually Buying

Age is not the problem with a U1D. Neglect is. Check the pin block holds a tuning and look at how much hammer is left before you compare it against anything newer.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Rent First. The Rent Becomes Credit.

Renting first is the low-risk way in. Nothing you pay is wasted, because it counts toward buying the piano later.

Yamaha's 121 cm upright and the most widely owned serious piano in the country. The letter marks the generation, not the size.

Questions

Yamaha U1D: What People Ask

How big is the Yamaha U1D?

121 cm tall, 150 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 218 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a U1D fit my place?

You need about 1.5 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². 218 kg, so the same straightforward move as any other U1. Lift is easy, stairs are a job we would want to walk first. Give us the measurements and the access and we will be straight about whether it works.

Is a used U1D a safe buy?

Age is not the problem with a U1D. Neglect is. Check the pin block holds a tuning and look at how much hammer is left before you compare it against anything newer. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a U1D instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a U1D specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a U1D in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. If we do not have one, we will say so and tell you what is close on size and weight.

How often does a U1D need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.
