A 121 cm U1 at 218 kg, one generation on from the E. If you have been comparing U1s and cannot see the difference on paper, that is because there mostly is not one.
Send the room size and which floor it is going to. If it will not fit, we would rather tell you now than on delivery day.
Yamaha
In the price, not added at the end.
Buy the instrument, not the letter.
Bright, responsive and small in the bass. The U1 voice suits practice more than performance: it tells you clearly what your fingers did, which is exactly what a student needs and occasionally more honesty than an adult wants.
By the F the U1 had settled into the form it kept for years. The differences between it and its neighbours are detail changes rather than redesigns.
Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.
218 kg is manageable. The route matters more than the number. At 61 cm front to back it is one of the shallower cases in the range, which is worth knowing if the hallway it has to pass through is narrow.
Yamaha built several at 121 cm tall: the U1A, U1D, U1E, U1G and 8 others. They differ in weight and case rather than in size. If the U1F is not on the floor when you ask, the table below is where we would send you next.
| Model | Height | Weight | Width |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamaha U1F This model | 121 cm | 218 kg | 150 cm |
| Yamaha U1A | 121 cm | 218 kg | 150 cm |
| Yamaha U1D | 121 cm | 218 kg | 150 cm |
| Yamaha U1E | 121 cm | 218 kg | 150 cm |
Ask what came out during the rebuild. On U1s of this era the answer is usually hammers and dampers, and if the answer is nothing at all, be careful.
The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do.
Renting first is the low-risk way in. Nothing you pay is wasted, because it counts toward buying the piano later.
Yamaha's 121 cm upright and the most widely owned serious piano in the country. The letter marks the generation, not the size.
121 cm tall, 150 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 218 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.
You need about 1.5 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². 218 kg is manageable. The route matters more than the number. Send the room size, the floor and whether there is a service lift, and we will tell you before you travel.
Ask what came out during the rebuild. On U1s of this era the answer is usually hammers and dampers, and if the answer is nothing at all, be careful. There is a five-year warranty behind it, and we are the ones who service it.
Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a U1F specifically. Ask what is free now. Nothing paid in rent is wasted if you decide to keep the piano.
Ask, because it changes week to week. When we are out, we say so rather than steer you into whatever is on the floor.
Twice a year. The piano heater that comes with it is not a gimmick. In a damp house, run on a timer, it is the cheapest maintenance you will do. We include the two tunings it needs after moving.
One message and we will tell you what we have, what it costs, and whether the U1F is really the right size for your room.
