Yamaha U1H Upright Piano

If somebody in Malaysia says they bought a used Yamaha, this is usually the piano they mean. 121 cm, 217 kg, and enough of them came out of Japan that there is a working market for parts, technicians and resale. That last part matters more than people expect.

Making the call

Is The U1H Right For You?

The safest buy in the range, which is not the same as the best piano in the range.

Choose the U1H if

  • A child is starting lessons and you want the option to sell later without a loss
  • The piano is going into a condo or a normal living room
  • You want the model most teachers and tuners already know inside out

Look at something else if

  • The player is past grade six and starting to push the bass
  • You have the room and the access for a 131 cm instrument
Sound and size

What The U1H Sounds Like

Bright and even, with a treble that speaks immediately. The bass is not deep, but it is clean and it does not muddy under the left hand. What the U1H really gives you is predictability: the touch is consistent across the keyboard, so a student learns the instrument rather than learning to work around it.

The H generation sits in the middle of the U1 run and is the one that turns up most often in restored form. Any technician here has worked on dozens. If something needs replacing in five years, the part exists and somebody nearby knows how to fit it.

Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. There is no right answer here. Both are on the floor, so try them back to back.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.5 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.0 m²
  • Case width 150 cm, depth 61 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

217 kg is about as easy as a full-size upright gets. Into a service lift it is routine, and up a short flight it is a real but ordinary job. At 61 cm front to back it is one of the shallower cases in the range, which is worth knowing if the hallway it has to pass through is narrow.

What You Are Actually Buying

Because so many exist, quality varies more than with rarer models. A cheap U1H is usually cheap for a reason: worn hammers, a tired pin block, or a rebuild that stopped at the polish. Ask what was replaced and ask for the serial number.

Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it.

Questions

Yamaha U1H: What People Ask

How big is the Yamaha U1H?

121 cm tall, 150 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 217 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a U1H fit my place?

You need about 1.5 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². 217 kg is about as easy as a full-size upright gets. Into a service lift it is routine, and up a short flight it is a real but ordinary job. Message us the room and the floor. It takes a minute and saves a wasted trip.

Is a used U1H a safe buy?

Because so many exist, quality varies more than with rarer models. A cheap U1H is usually cheap for a reason: worn hammers, a tired pin block, or a rebuild that stopped at the polish. Ask what was replaced and ask for the serial number. It carries a five-year warranty on parts and labour, honoured by the workshop that did the work.

Can I rent a U1H instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a U1H specifically. Ask what is free now. Rent for six months, buy it, and those six months come off the price.

Do you have a U1H in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. No stock today does not mean no stock next month. We watch for specific models.

How often does a U1H need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Tune it twice a year. Not because it gets played hard, but because the soundboard moves with the weather and takes the tuning with it. The first two tunings are on us, once it has settled in.
