Making the call

Is The U1E Right For You?

A sensible buy if you judge the actual piano rather than the letter on the fallboard.

Choose the U1E if

  • You want a U1 and are willing to take whichever generation is in the best condition
  • The room is normal sized and the piano has to share it with furniture
  • A student is working through the early and middle grades

Look at something else if

  • A teacher has asked specifically for a full height instrument
  • You want the most heavily supported model, which remains the U1H
Sound and size

What The U1E Sounds Like

Even and quick, with the directness the U1 cabinet gives you. In a small tiled Malaysian living room that focus is an advantage, because a bigger piano in a hard room mostly returns sound you did not ask for.

There is very little between the U1 generations on paper. What separates two U1Es on the floor is the rebuild, the hammers and how the last owner treated it.

Yamaha is the brighter and quicker of the two, which is why exam candidates keep asking for one. Some players find the treble tiring over long sessions. It is a preference, not a ranking. Come and sit at both.

Room and access

Will it get in?

  • Space: about 1.5 m of wall
  • Floor: roughly 1.0 m²
  • Case width 150 cm, depth 61 cm
  • Access: Lift preferred

218 kg. Ordinary to move with a lift, planned work without one. At 61 cm front to back it is one of the shallower cases in the range, which is worth knowing if the hallway it has to pass through is narrow.

Closest Alternatives To The U1E

Yamaha built several at 121 cm tall: the U1A, U1D, U1F, U1G and 8 others. They differ in weight and case rather than in size. If the U1E is not on the floor when you ask, the table below is where we would send you next.

What You Are Actually Buying

Look at the hammers first. On an instrument of this age the string grooves tell you more about how it was used than any paperwork will.

Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will.

Where The U1E Sits In The Range

Yamaha's 121 cm upright and the most widely owned serious piano in the country. The letter marks the generation, not the size.

Questions

Yamaha U1E: What People Ask

How big is the Yamaha U1E?

121 cm tall, 150 cm wide, 61 cm deep, and about 218 kg. Height sets the tone, weight sets what delivery day looks like.

Will a U1E fit my place?

You need about 1.5 m of wall and roughly 1.0 m². 218 kg. Ordinary to move with a lift, planned work without one. Tell us the building and we will tell you whether this one can get in.

Is a used U1E a safe buy?

Look at the hammers first. On an instrument of this age the string grooves tell you more about how it was used than any paperwork will. If something goes wrong in the first five years, it is our workshop that fixes it.

Can I rent a U1E instead?

Rent-to-own runs on a separate pool that changes weekly, so we cannot promise a U1E specifically. Ask what is free now. Buy the one you have been renting and the rent already paid comes off the price.

Do you have a U1E in stock?

Ask, because it changes week to week. No stock today does not mean no stock next month. We watch for specific models.

How often does a U1E need tuning in Malaysia?

Twice a year. Keep it off an outside wall if you can, out of the sun, and away from the air conditioning. Those three things do more damage here than a child practising ever will. Two free tunings in the first fortnight come with the piano.
